Flyers placed around Collier County could save someone from domestic violence or human trafficking

A simple gesture can save victims of domestic violence or human trafficking. On Tuesday, a group of almost 100 men took to the streets of Collier County to place flyers on the doors of homes.

Those flyers contain crucial information that could help those who need it or for someone who knows someone in need of assistance.

These men are raising awareness about the Naples Shelter for Abused Women and Children. These men have potentially life-changing information walking through a neighborhood with door hangers in hand.

Colin Estrem is a member of the Gentle’men Against Domestic Violence Committee. He joined the organization nearly 13 years ago. “When we hang however many door hangers, let’s say a thousand door hangers.. in my mind. Statistically, it’s going to land somewhere where it needs to, and that’s going to cause someone’s life to change,” Estrem said.

“I got two young daughters. They’re a reason for me to be involved with this and also the humanity of it and wanting to make sure Collier County is doing everything it can to fight against domestic violence and human trafficking,” said Estrem.

This marks the third annual Take A Stand Event. WINK News anchor Corey Lazar joined the men who broke up into groups and targeted different neighborhoods in Naples and across Collier County.

Data shows that in 2020, Collier County had more than 1,600 domestic violence calls.

Dan Bennewitz is the chair of the Take A Stand Event. “Well, I hate to say… when you look at the map of 911 domestic calls, it’s all of Naples. So you can’t say there’s only domestic violence in this neighborhood. It is everywhere,” Bennewitz said.

The event also provided an opportunity for meant to learn about domestic violence.

Lloyd Bettis is a team leader for Take A Stand. “It’s just natural to want to support something like this,” said Bettis.
